Launched in October 2018 as xDai Chain and rebranded after its merger with Gnosis in 2021, Gnosis Chain is one of the first sidechains of Ethereum to offer significantly faster and cheaper transactions. Its particularity is to have a stablecoin (XDAI) as its native cryptocurrency used to pay for transaction fees, with a separate token (GNO) used for the chain's staking and governance.
A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to have the same value as a given fiat currency, like the US dollar. Its purpose is to let users invest in and out of volatile crypto-assets easily while remaining on chain, to facilitate crypto payments, and to denominate the price of other tokens in currencies that people are familiar with.
